APPROACHING UNREST 2026-2030

Invited artists share their strategies dealing with global unrest.

During the coming five years, invited artists visit Stavanger through residency and share respective methods responding to systems of oppression and societal-ecological discord. The common factor is their action-based practice as well as long standing and persistent engagement with the more than human and planetary coexistence. Unrest is addressed through approaches such as eco socialism and creative resistance where the artists engage with narratives of minority, validate fluid identities, reclaim indigenous traditions and maintain cultural resilience. 

During residency the artists will contact local initiatives based on theme interest and invite public participation in the form of knowledge exchange and potential collaboration. Participation is particularly encouraged if you are involved with agriculture or excel in planting skills? Passionate about the preservation of endangered species? Engaged in trans or queer representation? Involved in spiritual practice? or simply curious. The program will curate the possibility for you to engage with the artists through curated meet and greets, presentations in informal settings and you may sign up to attend method workshops aiming for connections to manifest.

The project is nomadic in placement and durational where each artist has an assigned year of arrival and visit once in spring and a second time in autumn.

Participating artists are: Geir Tore Holm & Søssa Jørgensen, Elias Wakeem, Jenny Laiti, George Charkravarthi and Gustavo Alvarez. Please read the following artist introductions and see who is coming when!

Geir Tore Holm & Søssa Jørgensen

ECO-SOCIALISM AS APPROACH / Residency 2026

The artist duo creates long-term projects by focusing on knowledge exchange and social events in an ecological framework. They currently live and run the farm Øvre Ringstad, in Skiptvet, Østfold where they explore small scale farming and artistic practice. The artists farm involves a community of horses, dogs, cats, plants, microorganisms, local residents and visiting people. By living in informed interaction with their surroundings, the artist duo shed light on issues such as community dependence and connections between past traditions and future potentials. An example of longterm commitment is Sørfinnset skole / the nord land; a durational and educational platform involving artists and local residents participating in eco-oriented social activities such as courses in handicraft, building, cooking, fishing, excursions, planting and organizing celebrations.

Geir Tore was born in Tromsø and Søssa in Oslo. Both studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Trondheim. 

Elias Wakeem

EXISTENCE = RESISTANCE AS APPROACH / Residency 2027

As a Palestinian artist Wakeem’s performative approach is based on the concept that existence equals resistance—existence against occupation, resistance against gender binaries and systems of power which aim to erase queerness and otherness. Their drag persona Madam Tayoush is a glamorous performer and bold vessel of sincerity. For Elias, drag is not just about joy, it’s a survival strategy for building radical empathy. Wakeem brings stories from Palestine to global queer stages where their actions create space and possibilities for an audience to experience art as a tool of liberation. Elias’s work insists that queer liberation cannot be separated from a common struggle for freedom. In moments of mass dispossession and loss, art as extension of life performed becomes not only a site of expression, but an obligation to speak and remember. 

Elias was born in Occupied Palestine and studied at Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem.

Jenny Laiti

WORLDMAKING AS APPROACH / Residency 2028

Indigenous Sámi rights activist, climate justice advocate and traditional craftswoman (duojár). Laiti speaks of themself through belonging to their ancestral river Anárjohka, Mihkku family, and this community being integral part of land and water. Their art practice engages in the active making of worlds, where the endings and beginnings are held together through ancestral presence, relationality, resistance, and continuity. Laiti works in close relation with the wild salmon, rivers, and seas, understanding waters as living collaborators and knowledge holders within a shared existence. Guided by love for their land, river, and people, Laiti’s work is grounded in justice for all creation. Indigenous and radical ancestral futurity shape the path and Laiti works closely with local communities and previous and future generations relation to earth. Focusing on Sámi self-determination, local governance, and climate justice while crafting and envisioning future worlds.

Laiti was born in Aanaar, Inari and studied atthe Sámi University of Applied Sciences in Guovdageaidnu, Kautokeino.

George Chakravarthi

IDENTITY AND SPIRITUALITY AS APPROACH / Residency 2029

The artist devotes his body and self-image to explore politics of identity employing spirituality to reference a multi-faith upbringing of Catholicism, Buddhism and Hinduism. George explores specific public and private spaces as integral to autobiography, collective social and visual histories. His own physical presence throughout has been vital in creating dialogues about the body as site and representations of race and queer identities. Chakravarthi explores these themes through painted, photographed and durational live self-portraits. The works offer intimate access to his and our psyches and critical multi visual perspectives. Chakravarthi engages in interventions and participatory collaborations, eliciting revelations by culture-specific rituals, such as indigenous Indian and Tantric practices employed to recognize transcendental potential. 

George was born in New Delhi India and studied at The Royal Academy of Arts UK.

Gustavo Alvarez

CULTURAL RESILIENCE AS APPROACH / Residency 2030

Alvarez nurtures collective imagination by integrating Mexican culture. Objects like wrestler masks, indigenous craft or ritual become tools of performative exchange. Playing with the boundaries between the private and the public Alvarez performs in public spaces stimulated by unexpected encounters. Gustavo actively approaches minority groups in society such as the visually impaired, elderly or hospice. Alvarez also curates and organizes the Performance Art event “Performancear O Morir” in Sierra Tarahumara; A Live-Art platform surviving capital imperialism and precarious political conditions, an artistic endeavour sustaining through decades. Alvarez consists in collaboration with the indigenous tribes ofRarámuriwho relate to actions of resilience by performing ultra-marathons; running hundreds of kilometers on thin leather sandals/huarache. Enduring movement beyond fatigue andembodying hardship as a deeply rooted cultural practice.

Gustavo was born in Mexico and studied at University of Chihuahua, Mexico.
